I've seen many photos of people decorating their town by droping design plates on the ground. In one photo I see a guy with Water designs on his town ground. He droped many and dressed himself up as a swimmer to make everything look under water. He also made borders so it looks like the important places such as the Post Office are an island. In another design someone made their place look like a black hole by dropping plates the matched. They had a circular line through the middle. By placing them down In a certain way it looked like a black hole. I have a design for water which makes my house look like it has a backyard pool. I picked it up though because visitors like to tear up designs when their jealous. My whole town looked like the outside of Princess Peach's castle. And I dressed myself as a Toad.

Press the pencil on the top of your menu (opened by pressing Y). See the designs? You can make designs by going to Mabel in the clothing shop.
