Those who don't know, Vanitas is the apprentice of Master Xenoheart, the old bald man who wears the same outfit as Ansem's heartless. He wears a black outfit and carries a keyblade. Look at the picture below.

Now look who he has been revealed to be as:

after playing as ventus you learn that master xenoheart released ventus's darkness and it is venitas, venitas controls the unversed and when ventus and vanitas fight supposedly the x-blade (its called keyblade because X means key) is created it looks basically like two of soras kingdom keys intwined with a sword at the end
