Does the game lie to you?

In the manual, it says that heavy karts have higher top speeds than light and medium ones. Likewise, in the game itself, Wario's car has four stars of speed, and so does PEach's, so I should at least be as fast as her. Yet whenever I race against them in 100cc or 150cc, Daisy and Peach are both significantly faster than me, whether I use a light, medium or heavy character to go with Wario. (I usually choose a medium one, for the record.) Needless to say, I think that's bull-****.

Am I the only one affected by this, or is the game lying to you, too?
