Here is the list of the animals to make your chao immortal. These are the animals: Penguin, Seal, Sea Otter, Condor, Parrot, Peacock, Pig, Cheetah, Rabbit, Bear, Gorilla, Tiger, Raccoon, Sheep, Skunk, Dragon, Phoenix, Unicorn, Bat, Sea Creature*, Skeleton Dog . I hope this help someone.

I really don't understand why it's called a "half fish," isn't it a sea monster, that's what I call it.

It's called half-fish because its not really a fish, considering it can walk on land, but it has the physical qualities of a fish: scales, pectoral fins, but has webbed hands & feet that are meant to resemble fins.
The name half-fish comes from the guide I bought, when it first came out on the dreamcast.

well on a knucles /roughe stage get all three chao boxes and the 3rd 1 a drgonshould come out a pheonix only comes out with tails in mission streetbehind metal crates

Like Miles said, they're hidden OR if break open all three chao boxes, you'll get it in the last one. BUT the catch is that it's the same one all the time in a particular stage, like you can't get BOTH a dragon and a phoenix in Metal Harbor. Hope this helps.
