Extra Content and How to Download

These are articles explaining the available and upcoming downloadable content for Oblivion. Also found at the bottom are directions to become a member of Xbox Live and how to download from the Marketplace.

Horse Armor Pack

This was the first add-on introduced. It allowed for Steel and Elven armor to be added to a character's legally owned horse, increasing the horse’s defense.

The Imperial Orrery

This add-on will allow the player to enter the extra room in the Arcane University, the Mages Guild headquarters. The Orrery gives the player character new powers that boost one stat at the expense of another. The spell that is given is based on the phases of the moons in the game. This download has been known to have many bugs.

The Wizard's Tower

Frostcrag Spire is a home that the player character inherits from a dead relative. The tower provides a place to rest, a garden to harvest most every ingredient in the game from, an altar to enchant items, an altar for spell-making, and a desk that temporarily increases the player character's alchemical skill by 15pts. Outside of the second floor of the tower are portals for instant one-way transport to all the mages guilds. The player character can also create frost, fire, and storm atronachs that will help with fighting.

The Thieves Den

This expansion introduces a haven for thieves. The player character acquires a personal gang of thieves to do their bidding, and can uncover a famous pirate ship and make it their own. There are also new trainers and upgrades in this expansion.

Mehrunes' Razor

It is the largest expansion of all those previously mentioned. Its quest revolves around Mehrunes' Razor, a daedric artifact that randomly kills enemies instantly. A Telvanni arch-mage attempts to take this artifact for evil purposes and it's up to the player to stop him. This expansion is one of the most expensive, currently priced at $2.99. This is, of course, not counting the major expansion packs.

The Vile Lair

This expansion introduces a haven for assassins or vampires. It includes several altars that have effects from curing Vampirism, to the exact same effects as a normal altar, among other things. As well as a prisoner who never wakes, who is meant for vampires to feed on, and a servant who you can order to "Murder in the name of Sithis." If he completes his task, he returns with gold and a couple of bonuses as well. If he fails, he will return unharmed, but you will get nothing.

Spell Tomes

Spell Tomes is the cheapest download so far, costing $0.99 It simply adds rare books that grant the ability of learning various spells.

The Knights of the Nine

The Knights of the Nine is the first retail expansion for Oblivion. It adds a new faction and several new items to the game. As noticed by many players, it will seem as if nothing has changed. But if the player asks about local rumors or visits Anvil, the new content will be noticed right away. If the player decides to complete a Pilgrimage to the Nine Divines, he will be sent looking for the armor and weapons of the Divine Crusader. All in an effort to destroy a new enemy that threatens Tamriel, Umaril the Unfeathered.

Shivering Isles

This second expansion pack is set to take place in "The Realm of Madness", also known as the Shivering Isles, a realm ruled by the daedric prince Sheogorath. The realm is divided into two sections, Mania and Dementia, each one completely different than the other. In the February edition of OXM, it is stated that The Realm of Madness is considerably different in both look and feel than anything in the land of Cyrodiil. In the issue, lead designer of the expansion, Mark Nelson, stated that the reason for the drastic change in theme was because "People want to explore a new realm. Besides if you've played Oblivion for 200 hours, you've gotta be sick of gray stone castles." To get into the realm a guardian must be defeated. The new expansion pack has been estimated to have an additional 30-40 hours of gameplay available to players, and The Realm of Madness is said to be 25% of the size of Cyrodiil in OXM. Also in OXM it is stated that there are 32 unique ingredients to the expansion, 10 new creatures, 9,500 new lines of dialogue, and 4,266 butterflies seen in the first 10 minutes of the expansion. A new feature will be the availability for players to modify their weapons and armor and boost their stats. Shivering Isles is currently available in the Xbox Live Marketplace for 2,400 Microsoft Points. ($31.00 USD) The entire expansion itself is exactly 993.75 Megabytes. Which takes an estimated 30 hours to download on standard DSL services.

Fighter's Stronghold

Defeat the attacking marauders and become lord of Battlehorn Castle. Located in the Colovian Highlands west of Chorrol, this expansive castle will allow you to live the life of a noble warrior, with private quarters, grand dining hall, wine cellar, barracks, training room and more. And what castle would be complete without a few hidden passages and dark secrets? In this download, you can (quite easily, only a few enemies) take over a castle (mini-castle) and live there. Plus, upgrade the furnishings in every area of the castle, hire a vintner to create special wines to enhance your fighting abilities, hire a combat trainer to spar with, hire a taxidermist to craft lifelike trophies for your great hall, and many other unique features. But hey, decorated or not, FREE CASTLE!!!

How do I join Xbox Live?

It's easy, but it is one of the most frequently asked questions relating to the Xbox 360. It has some rough points for some, but this'll give you all of the help you need. First of all, you need a DSL/Broadband or T1 connection. This means you cannot use Xbox Live with a dial-up connection. Second, you'll need an Ethernet Cable. Which comes with the Premium Xbox Package. If you have the Core System, you should be able to find a Xbox 360 compatible Ethernet cable in Wal-Mart, or basically any gaming or electronics store. When you have one, connect it to the back of your Xbox, then to the back of your modem or router. Turn them both on, and then you'll be able to register to Xbox Live. Sometimes though, you may have to test the connection before you're able to do anything. If you need to, a screen will pop in with the choice to test it. Choose "OK", and let the test run it's course, which takes around 1-3 minutes. If you cannot complete the tests, something is either not connected or turned on. If this happens you'll need to recheck all of the wires you've connected. Be sure that you have the Ethernet Cable in the back of your Xbox 360 and into the back of your router or modem. Once all of that is done, you can now register, which is fairly easy. When you're a member, you'll receive a free 1-Month trial of Gold Membership, regardless of which system you chose. When it expires, you can purchase a Xbox 360 "Fast Card" which will give you anywhere from 3-12+ months of Gold Membership. You can also purchase these through the Marketplace, too. If you plan to download anything, you'll probably want to have a valid credit card. Or purchase "Microsoft Points" Fast Cards. Which will give you anywhere from 500 to 1600 points. You can read all about Microsoft Points when you attempt to add some to your account. Personally, I prefer using credit cards on Xbox Live, instead of dashing out to a store every time you see something you'd like to download.

Many thanks to jeanie72 for suggesting this.
