Obviously I'd want some decent people I knew to be survivors as well. And considering they'd probably have been with me at the time, I doubt I would have survived and yet they didn't.

Obviously TV is thinking of the awesome few survivors remaining scenario. You know, like Fallout, or zombie movies. In those situations, you already know that your family is going to die, or already has died, a horrible, bloody death right before your eyes, followed by the black guy, then the blonde, those inbetween and then the military guy in your survival group.
You're thinking of the depressing version, which, I suppose is more realistic, but hey, if the media has given us a glorified vision of post-apocalypse life, then I say we should strive to make that dream a reality. Bring on the bombs, God's wrath and what have you.
