You would have to test that out yourself. Or look at the required/recommended specs for Civ 5 and compare them to the specs of the laptop you're interested in.

The Lenovo has an HDMI port and a 15-pin VGA port.
The Asus has an HDMI port, and that's all I can see.
If your TV screen has either of those ports, then yes, it can be used as a monitor.

Both of these would run Civ like a champ. Also, Civ has a Wondows 8 mode with touch controls, so if you'd like to use that get one with a touchscreen.

There are lenovos with touch screens for about the same price and the same stats.

Hardly the number one priority on whether a computer should be gaming approved or not. ;p
@KoC - 'Gaming Approved' means it's capable of running modern games at decent quality levels.
