I agree with Tenko. Why should they show you it if you can't catch it. Though,I think the reason they show you it is so that you could go with Patrick to the lake to pick your Pokemon.

It's still a complete waste of time, the very beginng could have been a lot shorter to start your journey. They were copying Crystal with the red Gyrados, I say they should have let you catch it for wasting time. It took me 20 minutes to get it started.

I think it is one of many clues in the game, that they'll remake pokemon gold and silver on the ds.
