Let's see what I can manage off the top of my head... Arcturus, Ulver, Estradasphere, Univers Zéro, Art Zoyd (haven't heard much of the last two but I'm working on that), anything by John Zorn (Naked City, Moonchild, Masada books etc.), Secret Chiefs 3, Mr Bungle (better known on here than elsewhere but whatever), Melt-Banana, Kaada, Merzbow, Zaraza and uneXpect... I think that'll do for now.

Videos of some of these later if I can be bothered.

Porcupine Tree and Alcest, already mentioned. That's some incredible stuff.

Here's my input:

Rock:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - a pretty cool rock band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Day6N6DD8XA

Kyuss - stoner metal, not exactly unheard of, but need to be listened to.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAXGu81Rk1g

Mammal - aussie alternative metal band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PmhHPFgcwk

Silversun Pickups - cool shoegazey sound. they're getting more noticed nowadays.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmE57YE3pSc

Gallows - hardcore punk. i love it, but be warned about the lyrical content of just about all their songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlqiKM4suCA&feature=related

Hip-Hop:
G Love and the Special Sauce - great bluesy hip hop band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6CKkd-RLXw

Jamie T - really cool little british hip-hopper.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dwh0Wn5vVwE

...

Now, these bands are a little more difficult to get into, but they still kick ***.

Riverside - swedish prog band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMqd7zYkQaw

Sleep - stoner metal, usually grouped together with kyuss and some other desert rock acts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zj9IAvv32wE

Tomahawk - alternative/experimental metal band headed by mike patton.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt856_nRxQk
i wanna live like james dean, i wanna die a superstar.

Guess I'll share some stuff too.

Blackfield:
As long as Porcupine Tree keeps getting mentioned I guess I'll post another of Steven Wilson's projects.
Blackfield
1,000 People
Pain

Symphony X:
I wouldn't call them unknown, but I don't think anyone still here besides Nick and myself listen to them, so here they are anyway. Great mix of neo-classical and progressive metal.
Set the World on Fire (The Lie of Lies)
Of Sins and Shadows
Evolution (The Grand Design)

Evergrey:
Sorta like Symphony X, but I find them to be more on the prog side while SX is more neo-classical.
Broken Wings
A Touch of Blessing
The Masterplan

dredg: (Their correct typeset is with the lowercase d, that's not me being lazy)
Really cool art rock band. They seem to have grown their fanbase a bit, but again, apart from myself and the few people I've shown them to, no one here listens to them. They should.
Bug Eyes
Lechium
Information
El Cielo is their best album, but their hardest to get into. That's why I didn't post anything from that.

Anathema:
Admittedly, I don't know that much about this band, either. All I know is that they started out as a doom/death metal band and gradually became a sort of gothic, alternative, something band.
Fragile Dreams
The Silent Enigma
Eternity, Pt. 1 - the other two parts can be found in the related videos

To-Mera:
When I showed a friend a video of Blood a while ago, he said it made him think of a Lacuna Coil + Dream Theater fusion. Not incredibly accurate, but if it helps you get into them, go for it.
Blood
The Lie
Dreadful Angel

Rx Bandits:
Again, I don't know much about this band either. What I do know is pretty cool. Ska + prog-ish + reggae = ????
...And the Battle Begun
Hope Is a Butterfly (No Net Its Captor)
Overcome (The Recapitulation)

Not what I'd listen to to be honest.

Actually, the finnish gothic thing brings up Amorphis

Early:

Later:

One of many bands I'll be seeing at Bloodstock in three days time \m/

Also, here's something that fans of Ayreon and other Arjen Lucassen projects would probably like. The band features the vocal talents of Russell Allen (Symphony X), Damian Wilson, Dan Swanö, and Floor Jansen (After Forever)

Great suggestion. Got a video on Facebook from Ayreon's page with Arjen saying the new album Victims Of A Modern Age will be released in October

Gonna expand on dredg, too. Posting some of their early work, before their debut album, that's incredibly different from what they make now.

In a perfect world, all nu metal would've sounded like this. Thanks a lot, Korn and friends.
