I think it's a case if you have been working and contributing to the Spanish system for more than a certain amount of years they will allow you to continue staying here. If the UK does decide to opt out of Euro though there is going to be a lot of Brits in a real bad situation if they have to leave Spain. I think if need be I can get Spanish nationality because my mother is Spanish so I should be OK either way.

So youre there because you have both spanish and english family? So you will be completely fluent in both languages? DO you speak Castellano or Catalan?

My Spanish is not very good to be honest, I've been working from home in Spain for the last eleven years so I don't really come into contact with Spaniards to practice it which is why it is terrible, I can get by with it though. As for Catalan, I don't speak a word of it. My son was born in Barcelona almost eight years ago and he speaks English, Spanish, and Catalan fluently without any trace of an accent. How comes you ended up in Spain balthiersbit?

Not long to go now on the referendum. And im more confused than ever.. Started out thinking of leaving. then swung towards staying. but now I'm not sure anymore. Im sure in the long run none of the threatened terrible outcomes will happen and we will probably just end up much as we are now whatever happens. But so many people seem convinced that one action or the other will doom us for decades. Time for a change or better the devil we know?

I was a rep for Thomson, I traveled from Ibiza to Tenerife and back again. I met a lifeguard in one of the hotels and he kept trying to ask me out but I wanted to travel with Thomson and enjoy my life.

He won lol.

I have a bit of a delema with the EU referendum. It's in my best personal interests living in Spain for the UK to remain in the EU but as a country the UK will probably be better off in the long run out of the EU. As soon as Turkey gets into the EU that is when the trouble will begin as hundreds of thousands will head towards the UK for a better life (I can't blame them, I'd do exactly the same in their position).

I'd love to live in Australia, it's beautiful there. I've never been to New Zealand but if 'The Lord of the Rings' movies are anything to go by it's just as nice there.

I'm even more unsure what is going to happen in the EU referendum, I see that the 'Leave' party have pulled ahead. I still get this nagging feeling that if the UK do decide to leave it will cause all sorts of problems for them with companies who rely on their EU custom to survive and suddenly find themselves cut out of the loop with Europe dealing amongst themselves. I'm beginning to think with Russia not behaving at the moment and I'm not refering to their football supporters it's not a good time to leave Europe and test uncharted waters, there's no telling what could happen.

Ugh the Australian accent makes my ears want to kill themselves stop working. Plus my 'accent' isn't really like the other people who live in NZ, its a bit more British lol

No, that's Wellington. You see that shot all the time on the news when they're showing the weather.

Someone said that if the UK leaves then then Spanish is Gibraltar will lose their jobs.

That doesnt fill me with much hope.

balthiersbit, the thing about England leaving the EU is at the moment nobody knows what will happen, even the politicians, it's all scaremongering and conspiracy theories. I've heard talk of the pound suddenly plummetting, start of a ten year recession, and a Russian invasion. At the end of the day nobody knows what will happen. At the moment the polls indicate the 'Leaves' are going ahead but I'm wondering when it comes to the actual day of the vote people will get cold feet and start thinking about how they are going to pay the mortgage on their home and will instead choose to 'Remain'. Same thing happened with the Scotland referendum, wasn't even close in the end even though the polls were indicating it could have been a 'Leave'.

Apparently spain have said that if the UK leaves they will be making a further claim on Gibraltar and may enforce stronger border controls there. Not sure how far they would go though.

Im voting in. Not for any political or economic reasons as I can't get my head around the half truths and full out lies being thrown around by the folks who should know. But its a mad world out there at the moment and moving further apart from international agreements seems like a foolish move. We all need more cooperation and less walls.

I think Boris Johnson has dropped the ball, he's just turned round and said he wants to privatise the NHS, he says if people have to pay for medical attention out of their own pocket they will appreciate it more'.

I can't believe anyone would trust Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson, they look like a couple of weasels when I look at them, I certainly wouldn't buy a second hand car from either of them.

Now we just wait and see....

Why do pretty much half of the members here in GC live in Spain/Spanish islands and used to live in the UK?
