The Avian Flu
A epidemic is spreading through out the world. This epidemic started in Hong Kong in 1997. It is called the Avian Bird Flu or scientifically known as H5N1. This flu has already killed millions of birds in Asia. It has also killed sixty people, mostly in Vietnam. The reason why we should be concerned about this virus, is that birds migrate to different countries and could possibly spread it elsewhere, eventually causing a worldwide epidemic. Already, infected birds have been found in Europe, Canada, and the Netherlands. More recently, it has been found in Seattle, Washington and Los Angeles, California.
Experts agree a global flu epidemic is certain. A bird specialist reported that the best outcome would be to contain the virus until it mutates to a milder strain and disappears. However, most likely it will develop into a human strain and spread globally. Either way we must find a vaccine before it spreads even farther. At this time, scientists are not sure how it spreads, but most likely it is through saliva. As scientists work diligently for cure, the flu is spreading. Once a vaccine is found, it will take six months to supply the world.
This flu causes death. To avoid catching the Avian flu avoid any contact with infected birds and/or contaminated surfaces. Also you should be careful when cooking poultry. The first symptoms of the Avian flu is high fever, difficulty breathing and tiredness. The virus dies with the patient.
