Well, if you just started, I would suggest raising 2 different TYPES of Pokemon Equally

I always make sure I don't use too many pokemon, otherwise they don't train equally.

what you should do is after you get you pokemon and beat your rival for the first time look for a pokemon that is stasticly better that your rival.like if the pick torchick find a wingull and so on.

OK, no excuses for training up your Pokemon to have completely huge level gaps, because I'm saying now! Keep your highest and lowest levelled Pokemon at a maximum of 10 levels apart!
Please... Please do that for me... Awful teams develop from uneven levelled teams...
I also agree with DarkFoxDragon. Try to get six Pokemon in your team at about Winona point. That's what I did. ;)
