I could defeat him a couple of times by summoning Yojimbo and him
using Zanmato but after awhile Yojimbo stopped doing it a it was tough

Hm... technically, the chances of Yojimbo using Zanmato should increase each time, since they improve the relationship value between you and him... oh well.

Well, you'd really have to get the relationship value to almost impossibly high levels for him to use it consistently. As for how you can tell... you can't, just keep improving it by paying him more gil, never instantly dismissing him, never letting him die, reseting whenever he uses Diagoro etc.

Whenever I get stuck, I get all my aeons on full overdrive, so when I summon them I can use the overdrive move and take off heaps of damage.
