Yeah when you move through the area more of the map is revealed but all other paths either lead to a dead end or around in a circle the only path you can really take to move through the ruins is to where the lift is to fight Ultima then go to where Omega is.

X2 is a good game, if you take away the side quests on chapter 3 and 5 where you can't go one step without there comes an enemy.
