Do you have to complete the zero missions in order to advance in the game?

i love the game, but i can never beat the zero missions. i did once, all of them, but i forgot to save! are they necesary?

That's the toy shop stuff isn't it? It's been a few years since I've played. I remember they were frustrating as well to do.
They count to the 100% completion, but not to the story line if I remember correctly. But I'm probably wrong.
