EA would make more games like this but change the name from need for speed to something else. that's what i think anyway.
The first need for speed underground changed most of the racing games that was released afterwards, due to all the cars modifying.

That was in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 back in 2002.
You could have a cruiser (Ford Crown Victoria), a C5 Corvette Z06, a Lambo Murcielago, and a couple others, which I can't remember. It's kinda sad that Carbon is probably going to be the last game.

I have a strong feeling that even if the NFS games are finished, something else with a very sximilar storyline will come across, and will become very popular too...
