I heard there was a way to catch a legit mew in firered. after a little bit of searching i didnt come up with anything so does anybody know if this is true?

It is kinda true in , in a way , but you need GameShark SP , or Ds, which ever , just get AR , GS and AR are the same.

i know in the original games there was a glitch to get mew, but i dont know if it still works.

Well if you hack the game, then maybe, but other than that I have no clue. There's a rumor that you need the Old Sea Map to get to Faraway Island. Faraway Island is "supposedly" be that home of Mew.

im pretty sure the old sea map is sapphire and ruby but i could be mistaken

alright. i remember i got this ticket to this island. it was in a forest and i caught mew in there. the ticket of course was hacked. i just thought there was a legit way to get him in fire red.

The best way to get mew, is use the warp code for emerald, or just trade from a friend.
