It appears your partner Pokmon walks in a way unique to its species. For example, Hoothoot alternates each foot and hops around; Totodile jumps in place; and so on.
More information will be added as I retrieve it. I just have to wait 'til tomorrow, so I can test out how other bird Pokmon move behind you.

I've made another discovery. Shiny Pokmon don't leave behind a trail of shining dots as they walk.
Man, I was looking forward to the possibility of that. =/

This is really neat, I can't wait to see how each Pokemon moves & what Shinies look like in the overworld. This is the kind of stuff that tells me Game Freak has taken great care when makin' HG/SS.

I found a Level 7 Noctowl when I was using Headbutt. I caught it, and determined that it flies behind you as you walk. It doesn't even stop flying when you're not moving, surprisingly. You'd think it'd get tired. xD

All pokemon move differently, although some do things I wouldn't expect.
Like Pidgey just walks behind you, although Pidgeotto is always flying, while as another poster said, water pokemon that live in water because they have to magically float or slide along, like the Red Gyrados just slides along with you.
Still, the pokemon I've seen walking with me so far look quite cool, I've only seen a few so far.

I think they could've made the Water-types' movement a little more dignified... '- - At least have Magikarp flop behind you. xD
