That would mean that Ike, Pokmon Trainer, Diddy Kong and Lucas are also secret characters (where they're not) and Snake isn't (where he is).
It means that it's a newcomer that hasn't already been unveiled. Meta Knight, Pit, ZS Samus, Wario and Snake had, hence why they didn't have the message above their updates.
On topic, I think Sonic in Brawl's a great thing, because Sonic has so much potential in Smash Bros. The amount of hype around the now possible 'Mario vs. Sonic' fights - among other things - are likely to make sales of this game skyrocket.

WARNING CHALLENGER APPROACHING Means Secret Character. Your just thinking that sonic isnt a secret character because they are debating wether or not to make him a secret character. (He originally is one)
Sakurai said he was thinking of making Sonic playable in the demo, I think thats where all this confusion came from, I'm 95% sure he and all the newcomers will have to be unlocked.
Judging by the amount of Sonic fans, he might end up an overrated character. Nevertheless, the addition will boost sales, so it's easy to see why Sonic is making an appearance.
As for the third third party character, who do you guys think it will be? I can't say for sure myself, but my vote goes to the inclusion of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII on the Playstation (and also the movie sequel to the game Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children). He would be a great character to add.
