I haven't played as sonic yet but he seems very good not from his attacks but by confusing your opponent becuase almost all of the attacks begin in the same way causing people to make a mistake on what attack they are actually doing. He has a strong recovery move and he seems like a character that will be considered a great foe to go against.

ok i just unlocked sonic,did 5 brawls with him so far & i gotta say,top tier material to me,sonic has great recovery,speed of course,& excellent comboing!
