Get the bait for the rod and get the cat back to the old lady in the begining of the game?

You dont need bait. Just go over to the pier near the cat and catch 2 fish.

Bait helps attract fish but there's no point as you can catch two easily without it.
To fish, cast you rod into the water by making an overhead foward movement with the remote and watch the bobber (coloured pointy thing) when it goes the full way under water pull the wiimote up and keep it there until you have caught & reeled your fish in.

If you're realy wanting the bait, destroy the beehive above one of the houses (use the hawk) and bottle some of the bee larvae. Attatch that to the rod, you can use it as bait.

you can also get worms behind the sgns at the fishing hole later in the game
