Not to sound too much like Spock but if something is bad for you isn't it illogical to do it?

^ Maybe, but humans don't always act logically, especially when it concerns something they have an emotional stake in, like playing soccer in this case. The kid would rather risk dealing with whatever negative things come about from his heart condition than deal with the pain of not being able to play the sport he loves.

@nightmare - I kind of agree with your message. Not everyone who smokes or drinks "needs" to. But as someone who doesn't do those things it can be easy to assume people have a dependency on them when you see them doing them often. It's a hard line to toe as a friend, especially when they say they aren't addicted.

As all addicts say "I'm not an addict, I can quit whenever I want."

Nightmare said:Well if I learned one thing from all those English classes and reading assignments the only meaning that ever matters is the author's and not the reader's interpretation.

You were -taught- that? I am seriously disappointed with that. That is a stupidly narrow-minded thing to teach...

KoC said:...if something is bad for you isn't it illogical to do it?

Yes, technically.
My opinion on it is that my happiness and my dreams are more important than my health. I'm gonna do something that I want to do, because I want to do it. If it kills me, so be it. I'm gonna die anyway - May as well live my limited life as best I can.

Nope. Not all addicts say that.

So kinda like Epicureanism? Seek happiness as the only good.

No. The only major point I agree with Epicureanism on is that happiness is important - I do not believe that it is the 'only good,' nor do I completely agree with Epicurus's ideas of what 'brings' happiness.

I'm well below the average age here. I'm guessing the average age is 18. If so, I'm 4 years under it.

Ha just imagine it like 50 years from now(like this site will even be around anymore) we'll all be geezers playing today's equivalent of Pong. And we'll probably still be debating!
