Year 7! That's harsh. And Jake, year 10 is the same as 10th grade.
Year 8 at my high school was quite easy, especially the 2nd semester. We had an easy English class (when I say easy, I don't mean we're in the dumb class) decent Maths (since I averaged 86&, which is a high A), easy S&E (I don't know if you still call it Social Studies in America), and a few other easyish classes. But ugh, we had a HORRIBLE Science teacher that always made us work our @sses off and gave homework almost every lesson. My year wouldn't have been as good if we had exams in the middle of the year.

In New Jersey I had the '64% is an F' grading scale all the way through high school. Exams didn't start until the 9th grade, but in the years before that we had state mandated Math and English tests at the end of every year.
Here in Australia in years 3,5,7 and 9 we have a stupid nation wide test, NAPLAN. The teachers get so worked up over it and think you HAVE to get perfect grades to increase the schools reputation. In the 2010 naplan (year 5) our teacher was so worked up about it, she gave us some maths booklet that was 20 pages for homework. And we only had a week to do it! Does America have a test similar to naplan?

Mike: I remember having both Math and English Exams twice a year every year from Third Grade on. We also had state-wide testing from I believe Fourth Grade on. Besides that, I believe it was about Eighth Grade when Exams started.
Ours would take up the whole 90 minutes. Curious, did you get the bubble sheets as well?
Some of us would take 90 minutes, but for the most part we would finish up and than watch a video or read a book or something to that extent depending on the teacher.

That seems to correspond more to my college grading scheme, which I assume is this generous solely because the coursework is more difficult. Before the rise of the overzealous parent and 'snowflake syndrome' I wouldn't have expected this of a secondary school....
