Are all the votes going to be private, even when the competition is over (as in revealing the number of votes the winner got)?

We won't be revealing who each individual person voted for... We may reveal the top 3 or so... Don't know yet

Do you need votes to win?

It is an all-round competition... Making good treads is important, replying in threads important, getting some votes can also be important... I wouod say though creating activity on the forum and helping others is most important.

Because I feel that people are going to vote for mainly their friends, not the person the think deserves it the most.

I know I didn't vote for a good friend of mine, meaning I don't really know him too well. I'm actually going to play fair and vote for who I think deserves it, though I can understand other people won't.

Yeah, I read it. I was just explaining what I should have put in my first post.

i would try, but im gone for long periods of time, and everything i touch here dies (look at over 75 of the teams i have joined)

Rich, I don't think my vote is able to be changed, I changed it from one person to another and it shows the same.
