Also, depending on where you live usually differs what test you take.
There's no rule against it, you can take them anywhere. Northern states for the most part prefer the ACTs over the SATs, while Southern states yadda blah yep over ACTs.
I took the PSAT a few weeks ago. Last year I got a 1930, hoping to get Merit even though I know I won't. Taking the SAT this December, and ACT some time later. Depending on my score I'll take my second SAT in May.

Reading comprehension, writing and maths? What an awfully limited test.
American education is weird. Don't you have subject-specific exams? Or do universities just not look at them in favour of this SAT thing?
Yeah, the ACT. And you can also add on subject sections to the SAT, but colleges don't look at them.
The SAT isn't really about how well you can write or read, but take data and analyze it. So yeah, reading, but at the same time, it's not REALLY about the reading.
