Their defense did not 'win champions' aka get them to the SB.

Did they have the number one defense in the league?

Nevermind I thought they had the #2 defense but they weren't even top 10.

Well to sum it up, I was disgusted to see Denver win the SB. They were very close to dropping all the way to 5th seed, if it wasn't for the Primetime Chokers themselves choking in a Primetime game against Denver, if it wasn't for Manning returning half way through the SD game which they were losing & were likely to lose, and if it wasn't for an abysmal first 6 games of the season from KC. Then they would've played Houston (would've thrashed thrm), then the Primetime Chokers, which they could've lost (only if it was a non-Primetime game) and if they got lucky they would've played NE or Pittsburgh. THEN, after 3 games; 2 of which would've been tough, grueling matches, they would've gone to the SB again.

Just wondering, how often is it that the 5th seed wins the SB?

Pretty often, actually. In most recent history, there is usually a wild card team that makes or win the super bowl. I believe the Giants were a wild card each of the years they won in the last ten years, at least one of them I'm sure.

Minnesota during the late 60's and early 70's had one of the best defenses in the league 'The Purple People Eaters'. The whole unit went to the Pro Bowl in 1968.

Defensive tackle Alan Page:
9 Pro Bowl Selections (1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976), NFL MVP (1971), Hall of Fame

Defensive end Carl Eller:
6 Pro Bowl Selections (1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974) Hall of Fame

Defensive end Jim Marshall:
2 Pro Bowl Selections (1968, 1969)

Defensive tackle Gary Larsen:
2 Pro Bowl Selections (1969, 1970)

By the way does anyone know why Cincinnati can't win any Primetime games? (couldn't even beat the awful Houston Texans)

Sanzano: All you had to say was Alan Page. Enough said. lol

Matt: They don't have what it takes. Two words: choke artists. They simply can't get over the hump, and Lewis is to blame.

When they blew it in the last 30 seconds my heart literally broke into two pieces. It was as bad as when Green Bay stole a win from Detroit.

Warrior 13, unfortunately because they lost four Super Bowls Alan Paige and the other three members of the 'Purple People Eaters' are very underated. If the Vikings had of won one of those Super Bowls there is no doubt in my mind that Alan Page would be mentioned in the same breath as Jack Lambert, Mike Singletary, and Lawrence Taylor when people talk about defensive beasts.

Matt: You have to admit the Hail Mary was awesome.

Sanzano: Don't forget Derrick Thomas. If he hadn't passed, odds are he would be the sack leader.

Warrior 13, funny enough I saw 'A Football Life' documentary on Derrick Thomas the other night and they said he had 7 sacks in one game and came out of the game early to give the second string some playing time otherwise they said he could have easily of had 10 sacks. 10 sacks in a game!!! that's a whole season for most players.

Sanzano: He was a beast. Von Miller is the best comparison since him, but even he doesn't have those types pass rushing skills.

I'd take Lawrence Taylor over Von Miller or Derrick Thomas any day. Lawrence Taylor is the best outside linebacker who ever played the game in my opinion. I remember watching Giants games in the 80's and being awed by his physical ability. Best defensive player on the front line has to be Reggie White, secondary has to be Deion Sanders although Ronnie Lott was better to watch but that was only because when Quarterbacks found out how good Sanders was they rarely threw the ball in his direction, he literally shut out recievers for the game and made his part of the field a no-go area, Jerry Rice and Irvin come immediately to mind, both had lousy days when they played against Sanders.

I'd take both Taylor and Thomas, each on one side! lol

As for the D-Line, I'd say White and Strahan. Defensive backs are pretty tough, since they're have been so many good ones.

QB - Brady
RB - Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Dickerson, Sayers, Payton
FB - Alstott, Csonka
WR - Rice, TO, Moss
TE - Tony Gonzalez
O-Line - Way too many
