It's a glitch. Probably one of the best custom glitches I've ever seen. You choose your character, and start on Final Destination. One enemy comes in. Every 15 seconds, another one enters. The faster you kill, the longer you live. I once had about 24 Annihols against me.

Yup, that's right. I won Battle Royale off Gary in a Triple-Lightning Melee. Just think Lightning mode, but 3 times faster. And I switched the gravity to 0.005 for a laugh.

No, they do turn up eventually. Can't remember how to get them, but it can be done. I believe I found the Mario & Yoshi one during the Brinstar Escape sequence of Adventure mode, and I think Samus Unmasked rolled out of the Lottery, but I'm not entirely sure. AR is probably your best bet.
