Kap is more disliked for the way he went about things. There's a big contingent of people that take the national anthem and things very seriously and saw him kneeling for the anthem when you're expressly asked to stand as disrespecting the country and the military, huge no-no's for a huge chunk of the fans. Then there was stuff like comparing cops to pigs, and favorably comparing Fidel Castro to the US Govt. Plus many reports that he was offered backup roles multiple times but wanted to be paid like a starter even after his stats fell off a cliff. You start to get the feeling it's not about protesting injustice and more about making his brand bigger. It's definitely not just the protesting part people get upset about.
Plus Watson's thing is a whole he said, she said thing and a lot of people think that the women are only out for money.
Not saying I agree with either interpretation but it's definitely not as black and white as you've put it here.
